How I came to find alkaline water
I first encountered ionized water at the Vancouver health show and did a little research on it at the time. However, it wasn't until a year later when I saw an article at my doctors office, about acid water and all it's cleaning and disinfecting applications, that I started to look into water ionizers again. As I started researching I began coming across more on alkaline water and all of it's health benefits. Since I was struggling with my health despite eating healthy and getting regular exercise, the idea of a water ionizer sparked a lot of interest for me.
I read countless testimonials, discovered many scientific studies, scanned numerous alkaline water websites, and researched many water ionizer brands but wasn't sure. How much could I believe? I wanted to believe everything, the information I read was, so positive and encouraging, making alkaline water, or "miracle water" as it's touted, sound like the solution to nearly every disease and condition encountered. However, I didn't want to be so naive that I blindly believed everything I heard. Anyone can write anything on a website.
Having a background in Kinesiology, I could rationalize many of the concepts set fourth on these websites. I even got out my class book on exercise physiology and did some reading on the acid/ base balance. The premise of alkaline water improving the bodies acid buffering abilities made perfect sense.
Having struggled with energy levels, food sensitivities and back pain for years, I became more and more interested in what this water could do for me. The more I read the more interested I got. I then proceeded to ask my Naturopath his opinion on alkalizing the body. He informed me that he had a water ionizer himself, that he was very pleased with the role it played in his health, and that he recommended I get one.
It was only shortly after this time that I purchased my own water ionizer. The benefits I experienced seemed all too surreal. Before getting into the benefits I experienced, I first want to describe how great my health was as a kid, how it dramatically declined, and finally what it was like getting it back!
My Health through my youth and teenage years
Growing up and all through school I was a very serious and ambitious athlete. In elementary school I used to go out running in the early morning with my mom, then go to school and continue to run with the running club. I was running 6km before school even started at the age of 11. Then to top it all off, I would be the first kid on the soccer field at lunch hour. I was full of energy and motivation. I continued these sports all through high school. By my grade 12 year, I was training 6 days a week, with a coach who liked to push me to my limit. It was exhausting to say the least, but I loved it. In this year, I ran a 1500m race in 4:17 and a 10km (6mile) race in 36:38.
In this final year of high school, my coach urged me to continue racing through the summer, but I just felt like I didn't have the same energy or motivation. I loved running so much and truly wanted to pursue this, but all I could think about was how exhausting it would be. I was finding it harder and harder to get out there and train. It was a real struggle and frustration for me, because I still had the passion for running, but not the energy. In essence, it was really quite depressing.
On top of the physical stress I was placing on my body running 6 days a week, I was also experiencing a fair share of mental stress during this final year of school.
My Health through my 20's
After I finished school, my energy levels were not improving, in fact they were getting worse. It wasn't until 2004, 4 years after I finished school that I realized, I really had to do something about my health. I had no energy, felt antisocial, and I woke up every morning with a groggy voice. I was stuffed up all day, and I started to get soar joints and back pain with no injuries to attribute them to. On my way home from work I used to pull over to nap mid day, when I got home I hit the couch and had a hard time getting off it to prepare a meal or tackle anything for that matter. I was always tired and fatigued.
For a number of years my mom had been struggling with candida and chronic fatigue, so she was always seeing naturopaths; taking on drastically limiting diets, taking naps, and her mood changed by the day. I always thought she was crazy, talking about food allergies and this thing called candida that the doctor wouldn't even recognize. However, by 2004 I finally started to believe my mom wasn't crazy, so I took wheat out of my diet as I knew this was the most serious of her food allergies or sensitivities. Within a matter of days I felt phenomenal, I had so much energy, and was just enjoying life to the fullest. I wasn't stuffed up or groggy for the first time in years. However, this only lasted for about a month or two.
Within a couple months of staying clear of wheat, I was still feeling better, but not as energized as initially. I was now on a mission to find that energy I got a taste of. I finally decided I would go and see my mother's witch doctor, a naturopath! Here I had a vega test, which tested for different food sensitivities, parasites, and candida. They rated candida on a scale of 1-10. I was a 10. They also gave me a list of foods, longer than my arm, that I was sensitive to and should avoid. Lastly, they gave my a very potent, acidophilus, probiotic powder. I began taking the acidophilus and restricting my diet, to what seemed like nothing but salads, and started experiencing the most extreme headaches. I have never been one to take drugs or medications, but I was popping Advil like candy. Eventually the headaches subsided.
I did find that the better I stuck to the diet, the better I felt. However, the sugar and carbohydrate cravings were nothing short of an addiction. I would eat everything healthy I could find, but nothing would satisfy a craving for sweets, I would binge trying to satisfy cravings, until I would give up and have a piece of licorice - and end up eating the whole bag. The problem with this diet is that you have to stick to it. The second you mess up, your body talks to you. For me, it lead to great fatigue, and a lack of motivation to eat right. So, I would turn to the sugars and carbs, which made it that much harder to get back to eating healthy. It was a vicious cycle.
Eventually, I got to the point where I was feeling better, and doing a better job of shutting down cravings, but still didn't have the energy level I wanted. When I spoke to the naturopath about this, she would recommended all the supplements under the sun that I could try. I started to get discouraged as it started to feel more like a money grab than a solution to my problems.
Eventually, a chiropractor recommended a naturopath that has done wonders for my health, without the use of supplements (with the exception of acidophilus). He believes that the body is capable of healing itself, it just needs a little direction at times. I completely concur with this statement, as I have watched my body make remarkable changes with his help. However, I still felt like there was more. I would have my up days and my down days, and I wanted them all to be up days.
After Drinking Alkaline Water:
I tested my urine pH before drinking alkaline water to get a baseline. I was around a 5.4 and as low as 4.8 on one day of testing. This is quite acidic considering the urine pH should be around neutral or slightly acidic. After 1 month I was up to a urine pH of 6.5.
It took some time before I started to see some positive changes, however, because I came from such an acidic state I had a pretty immediate and powerful detox period. I started by going straight to the 9.5pH water. Knowing better now, I would have started around a pH of 8 and eased my way up slowly. I had pretty serious headaches in my forehead, I was getting the chills, I felt irritable, and I felt fairly tired. Again I could have avoided this by easing my way into the water, but I guess I'm a little too stubborn and it was a sure sign that the water was working. This detox period lasted about a week for me, but it was encouraging because I knew that the detox effects were a strong indicator of the dramatic improvements to follow.
Below is a list of the main benefits I got from this water after about 1 month:
Increased Energy: I have more energy than I had in my highschool years. I have so much energy, that at times I get kind of hyper and feel like I need to learn how to control my energy again. I find myself tapping my feet and swinging my arms when I have to sit still too long.
More Social: smiling comes easy and natural, friends notice that I'm not so quiet any more. Smiles used to feel kind of forced or fake, unless I was having an incredible day, now I'm smiling all the time.
No Brain Fog: thought processes are quick, almost too quick, I am quicker at reading and picking up jokes, I feel more on the ball.
More Motivation: For the first time in years I want to get back into sports, because I have the energy and drive.
No Muscle fatigue: My legs and muscles have more bounce, so often going up stairs my legs would feel like lead, there was just no energy in them, now I literaly fly up stairs.
Improved reflexes: I feel like a super hero, the way I grab things out of the air or catch things before they fall; it's like my brain is processing so much faster.
No Joint pain: I'm not feeling the chronic pain in my back or wrists. The joint pain was affecting my employment. I didn't feel I could take another serving job carrying trays. I always had to be careful of my back and used to get down and stretch it out at least every other day, now I'm jumping around without concern.
More awake and attentive: I don't get tired throughout the day. I used to fall asleep through movies, guaranteed. The other day, I watched 2 back to back movies, late at night, still wide awake, and the second one was a bore.
Loving life: I feel younger, the way I am not as serious anymore. I'm joking around and having fun again.
Allergies & Food Sensitivities are vanishing I have had to avoid sugar, wheat and dairy products for years. I ate a half of a pizza, for the first time in probably 5 years and didn't pay the price for it. I would have been near bed ridden for a couple of days had I done this before.
Cold tolerance: I used to crank the thermostat in my car, point it right at me and cook out my friends. Now I'm running around outside in a t-shirt in October.
Reduced Appetite: I can eat less and still feel full and energized. My body doesn't seem to need as many calories.
I can honestly say that I have taken my life back. I'm living life to the fullest, I feel energized, motivated, on the ball, and agile like never before. My body is healing and functioning like I never thought it would again. I can eat foods I thought I would never eat again. My body's thermostat works like a hot oven, and my body gets more from food than ever before.
